Organic food and food products are widely sought after and valued in the Western world. Large numbers of people have become very discerning in their choice of organic foods and this certainly extends to coffee. Indeed businesses compete for custom on the basis of the quality of their organic coffee. Regular consumers of organic foods are able to
distinguish organic from non-organic products simply by taste and aroma. Another advantage of organic coffee is that it retains more of the healthy antioxidants contained in coffee beans.
Organic products attract premium prices and large numbers of people are prepared to pay the premium. Many supermarkets have areas and aisles dedicated to organic products, and this includes coffee. It follows then that the world market for organic products is huge.
All coffee hulled, graded and marketed by Mannya Coffee is organic. Only natural fertilisers are used in the growing of coffee beans. No pesticides, no chemicals and no chemical sprays are used in the growing phases nor in the processing nor roasting stages. To achieve compliance with this, staff from Mannya Coffee make regular visits to the farms supplying
them with organic Kiboko coffee.
For its growth coffee requires nutrients. By using natural fertilisers such as well decomposed manure from cattle and blending with the soil we do our share in contributing to the welfare of the environment and thereby we farm in an environmentally-friendly sustainable way. Other types of fertiliser such as poultry manure can be used but it must be well matured
and broken up so as to avoid burning of coffee plants, especially young ones.
Decomposed vegetation can be another form of organic fertiliser. Indeed fallen
and decomposed leaves and vegetation can provide nutrients in addition to
assisting with weed control. The decomposed organic matter enhances the texture
of the soil as well as assisting with water retention, particularly caused by evaporation.
Knowing that Mannya coffee is fully organic puts buyers’ minds at ease as they reach for their packets of Mannya coffee beans, grind some and use in their coffee machine, coffee plunger, espresso maker or drip coffee brewers. It is best to only grind a small number of coffee beans at a time and to keep whole beans in a cool dark place.
Mannya Coffee through its outreach to and encouragement of coffee farmers focuses on continual improvement in coffee quality and enhancing productivity. Mannya Coffee is working towards accessing specialty markets internationally. These are higher value markets and result in greater profits for smallholder farmers.
Indeed Mannya Coffee is within the 3% of the world’s coffee which is organically grown and is working towards its coffee being specialty grade organic (which is within less than 1% of the world’s coffee.)
Organic Certification is Mannya Coffee’s first objective.
