Payments are made by cheque and withdrawals (small amounts) can be made at Mannya SACCO or (for larger amounts) at any branch of Centenary Bank n Uganda.
Microfinance
Payments for coffee sold to Opportunity Mannya Transformation Services’ factory are facilitated by Mannya SACCO. Farmers in Mannya and the surrounding area are encouraged to join Mannya SACCO.
Growing
Opportunity Mannya Transformation Services encourages coffee farmers to grow more coffee, and, importantly, to give care to their coffee plants so that their coffee is quality coffee. The benefits of the use of natural organic fertilizers are encouraged as is coffee farming in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.
Drying
Coffee is laid out on raised drying beds, usually of metal mesh supported by wooden frames and set at approximately 1 metre above the ground. This enables air to circulate freely around the fruit. Bountiful sunlight dries the coffee. Of course, tarpaulins are used when necessary to protect the coffee from further moisture, rain, etc. When the dried cherries (kiboko) have attained moisture content of between 13 and 14% the drying process is complete.
Hulling
Opportunity Mannya Transformation Services utilizes the dry processing method of hulling and operates a Pinhalense coffee hulling and grading machine with a capacity of 1200 kg per hour. The process removes the husk from coffee beans after they have been dried.
Whereas most coffee grown in Mannya Parish and surrounding areas is Robusta, the coffee processing machine at Opportunity Mannya Transformation Services’ factory can hull and grade all types of coffee.
Opportunity Mannya Transformation Services encourages all farmers to utilise the opportunity available to them to enjoy the benefits of their efforts in coffee farming.
Roasting
This process involves applying a large amount of heat to bring the raw or “green” coffee up to roasting temperatures then reducing the temperature to low roasting temperature (150-175 degrees Centigrade).
“In the modern world, coffee has become a familiar part of everyday life.
